Plot Summary[]
In Serbia, 30 years ago, in a military hospital, a young Mason Kane sat to the side looking traumatized.
In Oregon, six months later, a young Mason lay in bed. His grandmother told him it was time to get up. She said he was like his father, who would sleep in and stay up all night. He asked about his mom and she told told Mason that she was traveling.
Many years later, Mason, as an adult, told Nadia why he became a spy in the first place- because his dad died and his mom left him. Citadel gave him purpose in a place where not having a strong identity was an asset.
In Morocco, in present day, Nadia, Mason, and Carter get transported to a secure site. Dahlia assures them that Nadia and Mason’s daughter is safe, however, if if they do anything sneaky she will be harmed. When they arrive, Dahlia briefs them on their mission. She wants them to hack into a submarine. Nadia insists she does the dangerous jump but Carter tells Nadia that Mason is the only one who can. Nadia doubts his abilities but Carter explains that because of a mission eight years before- Mason’s credentials, his fingerprints, and his bio-lock are the only ways to access the submarine.
In a flashback to eight years ago, Grace briefs the team on the Red Cell Mission. Their target was Russia’s submarine. Grace wanted a Citadel agent to hack the automated nuclear submarine so that in the case Russia attacks a sovereign target, Citadel would have access. Grace asks Mason if she’s with him and he says yes- but also suggests maybe she call Nadia instead to lead the mission. Grace doesn’t respond to this- instead she and Duke continue to brief him. Mason demands Grace tell him where Nadia is if he does this mission.
In Morocco in present day, Carter, Nadia, and Mason board the plane and head towards the submarine.
In a flashback, Carter gives Mason instructions to infiltrate the submarine. Mason sees the sub and locks in his biometric data. He goes offline temporarily and plugs in a device. The text “Bypass Granted” displays. Mason calls back in to Carter and asks to be picked up.
In present day, Mason prepares for his mission. He asks why he didn’t get to know about Asha but Nadia tells him it’s not the time. Mason and Davik jump out of the plane. Mason tries to land on the sub but falls off. He climbs his way up with the help of a tether line and Davik. Mason opens up the access point and puts his thumb on the reader. The hatch opens and Davik tells him that’s all he needs him for and he pushes him off. Nadia realizes something wrong is happening and so she goes down there herself, shooting a few of Dahlia’s colleagues who try to block her from leaving.
Dahlia calls Davik for a status update and Davik asks her if she thinks she could kill his brother without him knowing. Davik then threatens her with the nuclear arms- asking for a seat at the table. Dahlia refuses to negotiate with traitors. Mason boards the submarine, with Nadia right behind him. Nadia knocks out Davik. Nadia enters a temperature-controlled room with the nuclear weapons. She tries to remove the nuclear cores to stop the weapon launch, but her heart rate rises at a very high rate. She successfully disables the launch.
Davik gets up and fights Mason. Mason fights him off and runs to help Nadia, who almost blacked out. Carter instructs him on what to do to save her life. They get picked up by Carter in the plane.
In a flashback to eight years earlier, at the Citadel U.S. headquarters, Grace confronts Mason about the mission. Mason admits that he bypassed the submarine so that only he has access- not Citadel. However, he offers to give her complete access if she tells him where Nadia is. Grace tells him she’s in Berlin, same as before, and tells him he needs help.
In present day, in Valencia, Mason, Carter, and Nadia approach a facility. Dahlia watches them on camera and alerts Cristoph that they are approaching with the nuclear cores. They exchange the cores for Asha. An associate realizes the cores are encrypted. Cristoph threatens to kill Asha if they don’t unlock the cores. Carter shoots the man holding Asha. She drops and Mason runs to catch her. Nadia calls her and tells her she’s sorry.
In a flashback to London eight years before, Bernard and Mason walk along the river. Bernard hands Mason photos of Nadia with a baby and tells him that she’s his daughter. Bernard hands him a plane ticket to Valencia but Mason is hesitant to go.
In present day, Asha asks about her grandfather.
Meanwhile, Dahlia sits in the dark. Someone alerts her that Cristoph didn’t answer her call. Dahlia seems worried, telling her colleague “they can’t kill what’s already dead”. She drives away and her house blows up behind her.
At the former Citadel U.S. HQ, Carter, Nadia, Asha, and Mason look at the abandoned, destroyed building. There, Hendrix runs up to hug her dad. Abby smiles and kisses Mason. Carter looks shocked, wondering how Abby (Celeste) is his wife. Mason introduces them, unaware that Abby once knew Carter and Nadia. Carter presents Kyle with a backup vial of his memories. He debates whether or not to inject it with Abby. Carter injects him and the memories come flooding back.
In one memory, Mason met with Dahlia eight years prior. She remarks how Mason looks “just like him”, implying he looks like his father. Mason asks for a favor and Dahlia seems confused by this. He asks her to find his wife- Nadia Sinh. Dahlia tells him she understands the devastation about losing the one you love the most. She tells him about what happened to her husband, Thomas, who died in a fiery explosion. Mason asks about her son. He asked, “Am I still yours, mother?” Dahlia seems surprised and relieved that he still remembers that she is his mother. She tells Mason that Citadel took his father, not a car bomb like they all believed. Dahlia found out that Citadel was really behind it. Citadel had the wrong coordinates, believing they were targeting a terrorist cell, but in fact they killed innocent people. Dahlia tells Mason to stop Citadel and to bring them into the light and to hold them accountable for what they did. Later on, Dahlia was the one who gave the order to take out all of Citadel’s agents, information provided by Mason himself.
In present, Mason is shocked and upset by these revelations. Abby asks if he remembers and he just responds “I don’t know”.
