Synopsis[]
Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency—tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people—was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. With Citadel's fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. For eight years, they have remained hidden, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts. Until one night Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies set off on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with the dangerous secrets of their pasts.

Development[]
In mid-2018, Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke had the idea to create a global spy show. She approached the Russo brothers and their independent studio AGBO to make it happen. Originally, the series was a collaboration between AGBO and screenwriting collective Midnight Radio, but during production in 2021, the latter group left due to creative differences with the Russos. This led to David Weil taking over as the new showrunner and extensive reshoots in 2022.
As of 2023, Citadel holds the title of the second most expensive series of all time, with a budget of US$300 million. The reason for the high cost is mainly due to the extensive reshoots that occurred after David Weil took over as showrunner. [1]
Filming[]
The main series was filmed from January 2021 to December of the same year. Reshoots were done in the spring and summer of 2022, with the supervision of David Weil, the Russo brothers, and director Thomas Sigel.[2]

The first season of Citadel premiered on Amazon Prime on April 28, 2023. The season concluded on May 26, 2023.
